Semester 0 · Bridge

Bridge: SQL Essentials

A short bridge in tables, SELECT, filtering, sorting, joins and aggregation in SQLite, so Data Engineering & Databases for ML can start at full speed.

No graded labs; in-browser exercises check every step.

Data Engineering & Databases for ML expects you to query a database from its first chapter. This bridge gets you there in three short chapters, working in SQLite: selecting and filtering rows, summarising with aggregation, and combining tables with joins. By the end you can write a query that filters, sorts and groups a single table, and you can say exactly which rows an inner join returns and which extra rows a left join keeps. If you already write joins and GROUP BY queries without a reference open, begin Semester 1 directly.

What you’ll be able to do

  1. LO1Read and write basic SQL queries that filter, sort and aggregate a single table.
  2. LO2Combine tables with inner and left joins and explain the rows each returns.
A join on a shared keyTwo small tables, each with a hatched key column. The left table has keys 1, 2 and 3; the right table has keys 2, 3 and 4. Joined on the key, they give a table with only the two keys they share, 2 and 3.keyx1p2q3rkeyy2s3t4ukeyxy2qs3rtjoin on key
